Harry Potter and the Dubious Reviews!

Harry Potter TheatreNow, I wouldn't count myself as a massive Harry Potter fan, but I do remember thoroughly enjoying both the books and the films when they first came out.

Back then, we had to wait a year or more for each book or film to be released. And I read or watched them so far apart that it was hard to remember what was happening from one to the next.

These days, I see nephews and friend's children devour the entire series over the course of a few weeks or months.

What has this got to do with Angel Rated?!!

Well, back in 2016, the two part play Harry Potter and Cursed Child launched in London to rave reviews.

I know so many people who have been to see it and absolutely loved it.

So, this year, instead of Christmas presents, my husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a day out in London to see both plays back-to-back (with a nice meal in between!).

As preparation for this, we re-watched all the films over Christmas!! That's a total of eight films and nearly 20 hours of spellbinding magic. And I loved every minute of it - snuggling down under a blanket in between hectic social events and being transported to a different world was wonderful.

Harry Potter RatingsAnd last Wednesday, off we went to London for our big day out. The theatre was jam-packed and my hopes were high.

But despite all the 5-star reviews, I was left feeling a bit meh.

The special effects didn't dazzle me anywhere near as much as I'd expected (I've definitely seen better at other shows recently!).

The cast seem to have been chosen more for their similarity in appearance to the film characters than for their acting skills.

The dialogue felt heavy in places, and the plot convoluted and over-engineered.

I ended up feeling that the whole thing would have worked better as a film. Which I guess defeats the object of making it a play in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, I still had a great time, and am glad I went. But it just didn't live up to the hype of the reviews.

The reviews written with the 'creative input' of the PR team and/or heavily edited to fit their advertising message.

The reviews written when the play first came out (and not updated since despite advances in theatrical effects over the past four years).

The reviews written by people I don't know, or who are unlike me in some way, or who are looking for something different.

Which got me thinking about Angel Rated and why it is so desperately needed.

People need to see reviews of products and services that are recent, that are honest and independent, and that have been written by people who are in similar circumstances to them.

Anything less, and you risk wasting massive amounts of time and money on something that leaves you cold.
